Free & low-cost counselling: how much should I contribute?
Our service is by donation, or free for those facing hardship. Take a look at our sliding scale below to decide on your personal donation amount.
FAQs
How should I donate?
You can set up a monthly donation via our Localgiving page, or you can send a donation via the same page each week, as individual one-off donations. If you are able, you could also donate the full amount in one go. It’s up to you. Donating a smaller amount (e.g. £2 a month) over a longer period of time is also very welcome.

I thought Frome Birth Talk was a free service – why is there now a sliding scale for contributions?
Our service has always been free – and it is still free! However, we know that there are people who would like to contribute, and for whom contributing a small amount would not cause them hardship. In order to be able to offer our service for free to those who really cannot afford to contribute, we ask that those people with greater financial freedom contribute a set amount per session. We don’t receive funding from the government, and so we rely on donations to continue our work. Without contributions from those who can afford it, we may not be able to keep going. For context, one counselling session costs Frome Birth Talk around £50, and private counselling in our area costs approximately £70 a session.
Will my counsellor know if I am contributing?
No, your counsellor will not know if, or how much, you have contributed towards your sessions. They may offer you information about how to contribute, such as a donation link, but your individual contributions will never be discussed with them.
Will you check up on whether or not I have contributed?
No. We trust that our clients will choose a sliding scale amount that reflects what they are able to contribute – and which also reflects their desire to support others who are less able to contribute. We do not require income verification for our sliding scale.
What if I really can’t afford it?
If contributing towards your sessions would lead to a harmful impact on your life, such as not being able to put food on the table, pay rent, or pay for your transportation to get to work, then you are dealing with hardship. Our service will always be free in these cases and there is no expectation for you to contribute towards your sessions.
